Living in the Kansas City area, we are fortunate to have close by The National World War I Museum. They have many wonderful exhibits, collections and research information available from the war.
Growing up, we were blessed to have my great uncle spend part of his days with us. He had served in World War I, but at the time I was too young to know to ask him questions. The museum helps me understand better what his life might have been like during the war.
A current special exhibit at the museum is titled "Color of Memory: Fabric Art of WWI." The exhibit shows fabric art that was created for those going away to war. Likewise, many fabric items were created for those wanting to take home war souvenirs.
The museum website states how fabric art reminds people of the affects of war for those both home and away. Needlepoint, silk screen, embroidery, quilting, painting and cross-stitch all are displayed in the items from Europe, Russia, Australia and the United States. Pillowcases, flags, tapestries, banners, quilts, table covers and other items are included.
If you are in this area, plan to attend to this exhibit! The museum website about the exhibit is: https://www.theworldwar.org/explore/exhibitions/current-exhibitions/color-memory-fabric-art-wwi
