After a certain age, one gets a little tired of the same fast food choices while traveling. Yes, there are times when fast food is what fits into our on-the-go schedule, and often small towns only have the same few chain restaurants. Many times, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are just as easy to take to eat at a roadside park. When time allows, however, we enjoy finding a small-town cafe or an ethnic food restaurant.
This week while traveling we were able to find a Mediterranean restaurant featuring both Italian and Greek foods. Of course, we each chose different foods -- my husband chose Italian Steak Roconchino, while I went for the Greek Beef and Chicken Souvlaki (pictured above). We tasted each other's, of course, and both were very delicious.
Almost better than the food was the restaurant atmosphere. A plethora of dark, heavy wood balanced out the plush vinyl booths. Stained glass lampshades hung over each table. Each group of customers was seated separately to provide a more intimate atmosphere. In between talking, there was plenty to see on the walls -- Meditteranean decor, a very long shelf of wine bottles, and paintings of both the Basilica in Rome and Santorini, Greece. It took me back to visiting both of these countries and the delicious food there.
Next time you have a few minutes, why not try the un-"usual" restaurant. Just a little something different can make you a little more relaxed for the rest of the day. You'll get to try a few of your favorite foods, and your kids might even find something new to eat besides the regular peanut butter and jelly!
